A Short History of Champions Trophy (Cricket)


The ICC Champions Trophy is a One Day International cricket tournament. The tournament is considered second importance to the World Cup. First edition of the tournament known as ICC Knock Out Tournament. The name changed in 2002 as Champions Trophy at third edition of the tournament. Ten test playing nations and two associate members took part of the tournament that played every two years since 2004. From 2009, a new format adopted. The eight highest ranked ODI teams as placed six months out form the tournament.

1998 Tournament
The first ICC knockout Trophy was held in Bangladesh. The match was known as Wills International Cup. All matches of the tournament were played at the Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka. Zimbabwe and New Zealand had played a preliminary match on October 24, 1998 and New Zealand won the match for entry to the main tournament. In the tournament, eight teams participated. The teams are England, South Africa, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Australia, India, Pakistan and West Indies. The matches are straight knockout round. The first round was quarterfinals. South Africa and Sri Lanka; India and West Indies were in semifinals. The final was South Africa and West Indies. South Africa won the first trophy with 4 wickets. J H Kallis was the Man of the Match of final and Player of the series.

2000 Tournament
The second edition of the Champions Trophy (ICC Knock Out Trophy) was held in Kenya at October 3 – 15, 2000. Eleven teams participated in the tournament. Three teams had miss out from the pre quarter finals – West Indies, Kenya and Bangladesh. New Zealand won the final match beat to India. The squads for the tournament are here.

2002 Tournament
The third edition of the ICC Champions Trophy was held in Sri Lanka in September 12 – 30, 2002. The tournament was actually scheduled in India. But it was switched to Sri Lanka when an exemption from tax in India was not granted. Twelve teams were competed – ten test playing nations plus Kenya and Netherlands. The teams were divided into four groups of three teams each. Each team played the other two teams in its group. Four teams that lead in each group to the semifinals. The final was between India and Sri Lanka. The match of the final washed out twice in also the reserve day, no result.

2004 Tournament
The tournament was held in England in September 10 – 25, 2004. Twelve teams were competed – ten test playing nations plus Kenya and United States. The teams were divided into four groups of three teams each. Each team played the other two teams in its group. Four teams that lead in each group to the semifinals. The final was between England and West Indies. West Indies won the fourth edition of the Champions Trophy.

2006 Tournament
The 2006 ICC Champions Trophy was held at October 7 to November 5, 2006. The first six teams on the ICC ODI table and the next four teams played a pre-tournament round robin qualifying round from October 7 – 14, 2006. The six teams were Australia, South Africa, Pakistan, New Zealand, India and England. The four teams, Sri Lanka, West Indies, Zimbabwe and Bangladesh had played and two qualified for the main tournament. Sri Lanka and West Indies qualified for the Champions trophy tournament.

The teams are split two groups.
Group A: Australia, West Indies, India and England
Group B: South Africa, New Zealand, Pakistan and Sri Lanka

West Indies all-rounder Chris Gayle was named Player of the tournament.
